12. On the Run Again

“We’ve got just ten minutes before he calls the police,” David explained as the car screeched around a corner.

Planting a hand on the dashboard, Todd braced himself. “So, did you strike some sort of bargain with him?”

“Not exactly. I’ll explain later. Right now we have to make these ten minutes count. I need to think!”

They rode on in tense silence. David sped down the interstate hoping no police would see him speeding. The wheels squealed as he turned down a road leading to a state park.

“Whatta you thinking?” Todd asked, clinging to his door handle for support.

“There used to be an old dirt road running to the Inland Valley Freeway. I took it a couple of times as a short cut. Few people know it’s there. It could save us a bundle of time and the police might not expect us to get that far so fast.”

David slammed on his brakes.

“Dang it!” Todd exclaimed. The road ended at a parking lot. Todd read the sign. “‘Day use only.’ What a bummer! It looks like things have changed since you were here last. The gate arm is down and the other side says ‘Do not enter. Severe tire damage.’”

“And there’s the road,” David added, pointing to a strip of dirt just within the range of his headlights.

“So close and yet so far,” Todd fumed. “Now what?”

Looking around the park, David spied a partly built fence. Nearby, lay a stack of 2x6’s.

“Quick, Todd, take the driver’s seat and wait for me!” David leapt out of the car and ran toward the lumber. Snatching up a plank, he raced for the park exit and laid the wood on top of the sharp teeth. He made certain the board leaned toward the car to form a slight ramp. Todd cruised up, saw what David was doing, and drove over the covered teeth. He grinned. “Great idea. Now let’s get out of here!”

David shook his head. “Not yet.”

He picked up the board, ran back to the pile, and placed it face down so the deep grooves would not be noticed. Then he sprinted back to the car.

Todd had already moved to the passenger side. “You could’ve just put it in the car,” he admonished as David drove on.

“That would be stealing. Besides, I didn’t think of it. I sure didn’t want to leave the board on the exit. It would have been a dead giveaway.”

Chuckling, Todd slapped David’s back. “Where did you get such a devious idea if you’re such a moral guy?”

David glanced at Todd out of the corner of his eye. “Just because I don’t do all the mischievous things you do doesn’t mean I don’t think about them.”

The Blazer jumped the curb and rumbled down the dirt strip.

Todd gripped his seatbelt. “I hope this still goes through.” He placed a hand on the dash again as the car bucked and rolled on the rough road. “Was it this bad last time you drove it?”

“No. I think they stopped maintaining it when they closed it off.
